2024 Geospatial Excellence Award winners ACT and NT
Congratulations to the following 2024 ACT and NT award winners, who were announced at our Geospatial Excellence Awards Reception in Canberra on Thursday, 21st November. These state winners are now eligible for the prestigious Oceanic competition, which will be announced during the Locate Conference in Brisbane from 6–10 April 2025.

INDUSTRY AWARD WINNER

Community Impact Award
Aerometrex, Anindilyakwa Land Council, Geoscience Australia, Australian National University, and the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA) for Integrating Indigenous priorities in spatially enabled planning of the Indigenous estate
This multi-year project, achieved in partnership with industry and government, has successfully established a community-led GIS system that honours Anindilyakwa cultural priorities. By generating essential datasets and story maps integrated within the GIS, this program amplifies community voices in Country planning and education, setting a transformative model for other remote communities. The judges commended this initiative for expanding the scope of spatial data to embrace the living cultural landscape, creating a lasting blueprint for culturally informed, community-driven GIS solutions.

Megan McCabe is honoured as a trailblazing geospatial professional whose impactful career spans critical crisis support, innovative analysis, and transformative projects. Leading vital operations for Emergency Management Australia and overseeing the geospatial team in the MH370 search, Megan has demonstrated exceptional expertise and leadership. Her most distinguished accomplishment, however, is the delivery of the Australian Government’s Digital Atlas of Australia – a groundbreaking platform that has revolutionised access to geospatial information, setting a new benchmark for place-based decision-making across sectors. Megan’s visionary leadership and dedication make her an invaluable asset to the industry and a truly deserving recipient of the Professional of the Year Award. Geoscape Australia’s location intelligence has been instrumental in enhancing the Bushfire Resilience Rating Home Self-Assessment App, a crucial tool developed by the Resilient Building Council to strengthen bushfire resilience for Australian homes. This free app empowers homeowners to take meaningful steps toward safety, with over 25,000 households adopting it and contributing to an impressive $56 million invested in home safety improvements. By providing precise address verification and building data through APIs, Geoscape has enabled advanced risk assessments and customised resilience strategies, fostering sustainable community practices and potential insurance savings. The judges praised the team for its significant contributions to emergency management, providing the foundation for more informed, resilient communities.

Geoscience Australia, CSIRO, Australian Climate Service, and the Emergency Management Spatial information Network Australia (EMSINA) for National Bushfire Boundaries Data Services
The National Bushfire Boundaries Data Services stands as a pioneering achievement, providing Australia’s first harmonised, national bushfire datasets. Delivered through the Australian Government’s National Bushfire Intelligence Capability, this initiative offers near real-time, three-hourly updates alongside historical records spanning over a century. Built upon the robust infrastructure of the Digital Atlas of Australia, the Services aggregate data from State and Territory sources to create a unified resource. Accessible to the public, this tool fosters shared understanding and supports collaborative decision-making across preparedness, response, and recovery efforts, impacting areas like human health, environmental conservation, and infrastructure resilience. The judges praised this innovative work for its crucial role in advancing our understanding of fire’s impact on the environment.

By integrating hundreds of trusted datasets through an advanced Geospatial Infrastructure, the Digital Atlas bridges borders, disciplines, and technologies, establishing a seamless, unified data platform. This groundbreaking resource fosters collaboration and innovation, enabling diverse users to derive valuable, place-based insights with ease. Its single, accessible interface has significantly enhanced efficiency, allowing stakeholders to access what was once siloed information across various government sources. The judges commended the Digital Atlas for its national significance and commendable collaboration across states and territories-an extraordinary achievement that brings data to the heart of decision-making.

Technical Excellence Award
Geoscience Australia for Position Verification at Geoscience Australia
Geoscience Australia’s (GA) Position Verification activities project exemplifies technical excellence in geospatial technology, setting a global standard for precise positioning. As Australia’s national geospatial authority, GA ensures critical location accuracy for infrastructure, industry, and innovation. Their stewardship includes Australia’s only NATA-accredited Position Verification Laboratory under ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring GPS data traceability to the GDA2020 framework. With over 700 Regulation 13 certificates issued for CORS nationwide, GA’s rigorous quality control and groundbreaking solutions support diverse sectors, from infrastructure to advanced applications. This nomination celebrates the company’s pivotal role in advancing global geospatial sciences, with judges applauding the project’s foundational impact on positioning infrastructure and international standards.
