Congratulations to the following 2024 Western Australian award winners, who were announced at our Geospatial Excellence Awards Dinner in Perth on Friday, 8th November, as part of the WA Geospatial Conference. These state winners are now eligible for the prestigious Oceanic competition, which will be announced during the Locate Conference in Brisbane from 6–10 April 2025.

Professional of the Year Award
Mary Murphy

For her tireless dedication to advancing the GIS field, Mary Murphy, Events Program Manager at Esri Australia and South Asia, has been recognised for her extraordinary contributions. Mary’s enthusiasm for geography and geospatial technology shines through her mission to inspire the GIS community, encouraging professionals to embrace new skills and applications. She fosters collaboration, breaking down silos to uncover innovative ways of working with geospatial data. Mary’s impact on the industry is profound, and, as noted by the judges, her exceptional commitment to education and support of GIS professionals has cemented her as a pillar in the field.

Amir Allahvirdi-Zadeh

Dr. Amir Allahvirdi-Zadeh, PhD from Curtin University, has made remarkable strides in positioning and navigation through groundbreaking work with GNSS and low-earth orbit satellite systems. As a Research Fellow and Unit Coordinator at Curtin, he tirelessly advances both the scientific community and educational landscape. His innovations in algorithm development and open-source software, along with his research publications and global conference presentations, underscore his commitment to the field. Through his dedicated lectures and mentorship of undergraduate and PhD students, Dr. Allahvirdi-Zadeh is shaping the future of surveying and spatial sciences. Judges commend his significant contributions to the education and advancement of the field.

NGIS with FrontierSI and CSIRO for Vanuatu Climate Futures Portal
The Vanuatu Climate Futures Portal stands as a vital resource for climate resilience, delivering essential climate information to empower decision-makers in Vanuatu’s government and local communities. This comprehensive platform supports climate adaptation and strategic planning across critical sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, fisheries, tourism, and water, equipping Vanuatu to address the impacts of a changing climate. As the flagship achievement of the Van-Kirap initiative, this collaborative, multi-year project exemplifies the power of climate science-based services to enhance community preparedness. Judges praised this initiative for delivering substantial, long-term climate resilience benefits to Vanuatu with a potential model for other Pacific island nations.

Environment and Sustainability Award
FrontierSI with Rio Tinto, Roy Hill, BHP, FMG, Atlas Iron, Mineral Resources, Curtin University, DWER, DBCA for ENVestigator Toolkit
The ENVestigator Initiative harnesses cutting-edge high-resolution satellite imagery and advanced ensemble models to precisely track and assess the environmental impact of mining on vegetation, whether nearby or remote. By providing near real-time alerts and comprehensive historical data, ENVestigator empowers mine-site operators and regulators with a shared, transparent toolkit for environmental monitoring. This collaborative approach enhances trust and improves operational efficiency, setting a new standard for environmental stewardship. Judges commended this initiative for its inspiring use of spatial technology to foster collaboration through mapping and analysis, with the potential to become a vital national resource.

Innovation Award – Medium to Large Business
NGIS and Google for TraceMark
In response to rising global demands for sustainable sourcing, Google and NGIS have launched the TraceMark SAAS platform, a groundbreaking tool for promoting sustainability in raw material supply chains. Designed for companies with complex, global operations, TraceMark empowers businesses to produce deforestation-free products, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance certifications, all while mitigating social risks. Judges commended this innovative platform for seamlessly integrating vast datasets, providing certainty for suppliers and manufacturers, and setting a new standard in data-informed decision-making.

International Partnership Award
NGIS and Google for TraceMark
With an impressive integration of advanced geospatial technology and data-driven automation, TraceMark is setting a new standard in EU Deforestation Regulation compliance. Already adopted by leading global companies in palm, coffee, soy, cocoa, rubber, timber, and leather industries, this platform represents a vital international project in regulatory alignment. The judges praised NGIS for combining multiple data sources in a powerful tool for compliance, enabled through collaboration with Google to ensure accessibility across diverse infrastructures. The global potential for this platform is remarkable, paving the way for sustainable industry practices on an international scale.

Technical Excellence Award
Cartographic Services Unit – DBCA for Thematic Mapping for the Forest Management Plan 2024-2033
The Cartographic Services Unit at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions has masterfully completed the mapping for the 2024–2033 Forest Management Plan. Through the innovative use of MAPublisher, the team produced 13 detailed A4 thematic maps, capturing critical themes such as Aboriginal Language Groups, Dieback Occurrence, and Proposed Land Categories. To provide deeper insights, three expansive A0 appendix maps showcase forestry data with exceptional detail. By implementing a modernized cartographic specification, the team ensured top-tier standards in their work.
Judges applauded this project for its substantial scope and outstanding quality, marking a notable achievement in cartography.
