Webinar: Discovery of the USS Edsell by Autonomous Underwater Vehicles(AUV)
RegisterThe Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is responsible for the monitoring and protection of Australia’s’ critical underwater infrastructure from our coast to the deepest parts of the abyssal plain.
Navy met this challenge by investing in people and technology and learning the art of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) and utilising the significant abilities of the Hugin 6000 and later Superior vehicles to understand how to operate in this challenging domain.
To demonstrate the newly acquired skillset, Navy set about searching for a wreck of the USS Edsell a US Navy destroyer sunk during the Second World War. The technical difficulties presented by this environment are significant, but by investing in people and technology the RAN was able to demonstrate its ability to reach the deepest part of the Oceans around Australia.
This presentation will describe the process followed to locate the USS Edsell and show the results of the search. In late 2024, the US Navy acknowledged the discovery of the wreck as a war grave.
Ian Jackson and Hannah Lee are both Hydrographic specialists in the RAN.
Registration is free of charge for individual GCA Members or a low cost of $55 for non-members.
