Geospatial Council of Australia Announces Board Leadership Updates

Geospatial Council of Australia Announces Board Leadership Updates

The Geospatial Council of Australia (GCA) is pleased to announce changes to its Board following the AGM held on 21 November 2024.

The AGM marked the conclusion of terms for two longstanding Directors, Paul Digney and Jacinta Burns, whose contributions have been instrumental to GCA’s progress and impact. Both Paul and Jacinta have played pivotal roles not only as Board members but also in other capacities, championing initiatives that have strengthened the organisation’s mission to serve the geospatial community.

In their place, GCA welcomes two new Directors, Noel Davidson and Alex Leith, whose expertise and diverse perspectives will enrich the organisation’s leadership.

Noel is a Principal Surveyor with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and a Registered Surveyor with an Engineering Endorsement. An accredited Engineering Surveying Professional with GCA, Noel brings a wealth of experience in construction surveying, including bridges, roadworks, and retaining structures. He has authored a key overarching technical construction surveying specification for TMR construction contracts, and currently manages updates to the department’s Surveying Standards. Noel also chairs GCA’s Engineering Surveying Certification Working Group, showcasing his dedication to advancing professional standards.

Alex is the Executive Director at Auspatious. With expertise in software development, cloud infrastructure, and program governance, he focuses on making earth observation data accessible to drive sustainable development. He brings significant Board and governance experience through his volunteer roles with OSGeo Oceania and Earth Observation Australia. Alex’s innovative approach to geospatial technology and data governance will be a valuable asset to GCA.

Additionally, Alistair Byrom and Darren Mottolini have been reappointed as Directors, ensuring continued strong leadership and a commitment to GCA’s strategic goals.

The GCA Board now comprises the following Directors:

  • Kate Lundy – Chair
  • Alistair Byrom – Deputy Chair
  • Kate Ramsay – Deputy Chair
  • Noel Davidson
  • Alex Leith
  • Darren Mottolini
  • Roshni Sharma
  • Mary-Ellen Feeney

The Honourable Kate Lundy, HonLittD, GAICD, Chair of GCA says, “I am delighted to welcome Noel Davidson and Alex Leith to the Board. Their expertise and passion for the geospatial sector will undoubtedly strengthen our leadership team and help us continue to deliver for our members and the broader community.

“I also want to express my thanks to Paul Digney and Jacinta Burns for their exceptional service. When I joined the Board last year, Paul was serving as Acting Chair. He had graciously agreed to extend his term after completing a full term as Chair of SSSI and playing a pivotal role in the merger that led to the creation of GCA. This was during a challenging period following the unexpected passing of Peter Woodgate, GCA’s inaugural Chair, in December 2023. Paul’s steady leadership during this transitional time was invaluable, and his dedication to the geospatial sector has left a lasting legacy. Jacinta’s contributions have also been integral to GCA’s growth and success, particularly in championing initiatives that foster inclusivity and collaboration.

“On behalf of the Board, I extend our deepest thanks to both Paul and Jacinta and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”
