Hydrographic Industry Partnership Program (HIPP)
Under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974, the Australian Government has an international obligation to provide hydrographic services covering the Australian Charting Area. Defence is charged with the responsibility to deliver these services to the nation, on behalf of the Government, through the Navigation Act 2012. The HIPP is a partnership between the Australian Commonwealth and private industry to help deliver an extensive program of nautical charting surveys in Australian territorial waters. The goal of the initiative is to further improve the understanding of the unique Australian sea charting area, which comprises around 10% of the earth’s surface, supports a thriving maritime industry and is home to diverse and unique marine life.

Michael Noonan, Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral, AO, RAN comments that as a result of the HIPP program, industry will be able to use the latest hydrographic techniques and state of the art equipment to deliver quality hydrographic data to Defence, who chart and disseminate this information. A panel of six Australian and one New Zealand-based hydrographic survey companies were selected to support Defence in conducting maritime surveys which enable safe navigation for mariners and support Australia’s maritime industry. The panel members are:

  • Discovery Marine Australia Ltd - Tauranga, New Zealand
  • EGS Survey Pty Ltd - Mount Lawley, WA
  • FUGRO Australia Marine Pty Ltd - Perth, WA
  • Guardian Geomatics Pty Ltd - Subiaco, WA
  • iXblue Pty Ltd - Wynnum West, QLD
  • MMA Offshore - Perth, WA
  • Precision Hydrographic Services Pty Ltd – St Marys, SA

Phil provided a summary of HIPP projects to date, highlights from the most recent HIPP conference and success/challenges of selected projects.
